So you’ve heard about the Perricone Prescription diet, but you’re unsure what it entails. You know that salmon is on the menu, but what else? Will you like it? Is it worth it?
Let’s find the answers to all these questions. First we’ll look at the myriad of benefits that the Perricone diet can provide and then we’ll consider a sample day of meals.
First, the many benefits of the Perricone Prescription diet can be summed up this way – it’s beneficial. Want more detail? How about we examine the benefits?
Those who follow the Perricone Prescription diet plan notice first that they have a lot of energy. Many dieters might notice this the first day they follow the diet, since it’s full of whole, simple foods that energize and vitalize the body.
After noticing the vitality, many dieters notice that their skin is fresher, younger and more vital looking. It feels firmer, suppler and it might even seem less wrinkled.
The long-term affects of the diet include the reduction of illness and an overall sense of well being. And Dr. Nicholas Perricone, the founder of the diet, says that because you’re eating only whole, real foods on the diet, you are staving off a myriad of possible diseases.
How do you get those benefits? You follow a structured eating plan that looks something like the following.
For breakfast, you might eat:
½ cup of old-fashioned (not the quick variety) oatmeal with sliced pear and raw sunflower seeds
3 ounces salmon
Green tea or at least 8 ounces of water
For lunch, you might eat:
Broiled or poached free-range chicken with a mixed green salad (you can use olive oil and lemon on your salad)
Green tea or at least 8 ounces of water
For an afternoon snack, how about:
2 ounces of sliced turkey breast (not lunch meat)
½ c. strawberries
For dinner, you might eat:
Broiled salmon with a miso rub, or other natural marinade
Asian vegetable salad (following the guidelines for dressing above)
Yogurt with fresh blueberries
For other snacks during the day, you can have:
A handful of almonds and a handful of blueberries
There are a few critical elements to notice. One is that you eat salmon at least twice a day, for a total of at least 6-8 ounces a day. You also eat food that is naturally cooked (broiled or poached meat is excellent), and served with simply prepared vegetables. You should ideally drink green tea all day, but water is fine as well. You are not allowed any caffeine or sodas (even diet sodas). You’ll also notice there’s no bread or sugar here. Many fruits are restricted because they contain too many simple sugars.
This gives you a broad overview of the Perricone Prescription diet plan. Certainly, if you’re interested in following it, you’ll want to read the book, or visit Dr. Perricione’s website for more information. It certainly can’t hurt to give it a try, for the energy and antiaging benefits alone.
